Airway Care

Clear Aligner Therapy & Airway-Focused Orthodontics

At Well Being Dentistry, we view clear aligner therapy as much more than simply straightening teeth. Our airway-focused approach to orthodontic treatment aims to improve the overall balance, function, and long-term health of the oral environment while also supporting a healthier airway and more stable bite relationship.

By broadening the dental arches and improving the way the teeth come together, clear aligner therapy can help create more functional space for the tongue and support improved oral airflow dynamics. Creating better tongue space and arch form may help encourage healthier oral posture, more balanced function, and improved airway support as part of a comprehensive approach to oral-systemic health.

Properly aligned teeth are also significantly easier to clean and maintain. Crowded or overlapping teeth can create difficult-to-reach areas where plaque, biofilm, and harmful bacteria accumulate more easily, contributing to inflammation, gum disease, and long-term breakdown of supporting tissues. By improving alignment and creating a healthier bite relationship, orthodontic therapy can help support healthier gums, improved plaque control, and greater long-term stability of the dentition.

Our focus is always on creating balance — not simply cosmetic alignment. Establishing a more stable occlusion and healthier functional relationship between the teeth, muscles, tongue, and airway may help reduce excessive wear, uneven bite forces, and chronic stress on the teeth over time. Supporting a stable, balanced bite is an important part of helping preserve the natural dentition for as long as possible.

Clear aligner therapy works through a series of custom-designed removable aligners that gradually guide the teeth into healthier positions over time. Successful treatment requires consistency, patient compliance, and long-term retention. Following active treatment, retainers play an essential role in helping stabilize the teeth, protect the bite relationship, and maintain the long-term results and functional balance that have been created.

And while improved function and health remain the priority, one of the added benefits of clear aligner therapy is often the development of broader, fuller, and beautifully aligned smiles that look as healthy as they feel.

ALF Appliance Therapy & Growth-Focused Airway Development

At Well Being Dentistry, we believe that early guidance of jaw growth and airway development can have a profound impact on a child’s long-term health, function, and quality of life. Using a gentle, airway-focused philosophy, we incorporate appliance therapy to help support more natural growth and development of the jaws, dental arches, tongue space, and airway.

ALF therapy uses light, flexible wire appliances designed to encourage healthy growth patterns rather than relying on heavy force or aggressive expansion. By working with the body’s natural development, these appliances help guide the jaws into more balanced positions while promoting improved tongue posture, oral function, and arch development during critical growth years.

At Well Being Dentistry, we may begin this therapy as early as age 6 in order to take advantage of important developmental growth periods and help address narrowing jaws, crowded arches, or underdeveloped airway structures before they become more significant later in life. Early intervention can often help create more space for permanent teeth to erupt naturally while also supporting healthier facial and airway development as children grow.

While creating room for permanent teeth is certainly beneficial, our primary focus extends far beyond simply avoiding crowding. Proper jaw development and increased tongue and airway space may play an important role in supporting healthier breathing, sleep quality, facial growth, and overall function during childhood development. Airway-focused growth guidance may help reduce the risk of issues associated with poor sleep and chronic airway compromise, including restless sleep, mouth breathing, daytime fatigue, behavioral concerns, difficulty focusing, and symptoms that may overlap with conditions such as ADHD.

ALF therapy typically involves wearing a custom upper and/or lower appliance throughout the day and night to help gently guide growth and development over time. In some cases, appliances may be fixed onto the teeth if this is determined to be the best option for your child. Treatment requires routine monitoring, adjustments, and appliance updates as the jaws, teeth, and airway continue to change and grow throughout development. In select situations, ALF therapy may also be recommended for adult patients dealing with certain functional or airway-related concerns.

Because the mouth, airway, tongue posture, and nervous system are all closely connected, our goal is to help guide children toward healthier growth patterns that support not only straighter teeth but also healthier and more resilient development as a whole.

Mandibular Advancement Appliances & Airway Support

At Well Being Dentistry, we offer custom mandibular advancement appliances as part of our airway-focused approach to improving sleep quality, breathing, and overall health. These custom oral appliances are designed to help support a healthier and more open airway during sleep by gently positioning the lower jaw in a more forward position.

When the lower jaw falls too far backward during sleep, the tongue and surrounding soft tissues can collapse toward the airway and contribute to narrowing or obstruction of airflow. Mandibular advancement appliances help minimize this collapse by helping maintain a more forward jaw position, which can improve airway space and reduce the likelihood of the tongue blocking airflow during sleep.

These appliances may help improve sleep quality, reduce snoring, support healthier nighttime breathing, and decrease some of the symptoms associated with poor sleep and airway restriction. For many patients, improved sleep can positively influence daytime energy levels, cognitive function, focus, recovery, and overall quality of life.

Because every patient’s airway anatomy and bite relationship are unique, these appliances are custom designed with a variety of possible styles and configurations depending on the individual patient’s needs and treatment goals. Fabrication of the appliance typically requires a simple digital scan of the teeth and bite relationship. Treatment often involves a period of adjustment as the appliance is gradually optimized for comfort and airway effectiveness, and occasional follow-up adjustments may be needed over time to maintain ideal positioning and function.

Whenever possible, we prefer patients complete a sleep study prior to beginning treatment in order to establish a baseline understanding of sleep quality and airway health. Follow-up sleep testing at later stages of treatment can also be extremely valuable in helping determine how effectively the appliance is improving the condition and supporting healthier sleep patterns.

Mandibular advancement appliances are often used as part of a broader airway-focused treatment plan and may be combined with other therapies such as laser snoring treatment, myofunctional therapy, orthodontic expansion, or CPAP therapy when indicated by your medical team, all depending on the individual patient’s needs.

Our goal is to help create a more stable and functional airway environment during sleep while supporting long-term oral health, comfort, and overall wellness.

NightLase® Snoring Treatment & Airway Remodeling

NightLase® is a non-invasive laser therapy designed to help reduce snoring and support a healthier airway by gently tightening and remodeling soft tissues within the mouth and throat. At Well Being Dentistry, we use our dual-wavelength Fotona laser system and a carefully designed treatment protocol to deliver controlled laser energy to targeted airway structures, including the soft palate, lateral throat tissues, tongue, and surrounding soft tissues.

The laser energy penetrates deeply into the tissues while gently heating them in a controlled manner to stimulate collagen formation, tissue tightening, and long-term remodeling. Many patients describe the concept as similar to a “facelift” for the soft palate and airway tissues. As these tissues become firmer and more toned, they may be less likely to collapse or vibrate during sleep—helping reduce snoring volume while supporting improved oxygen flow through the airway.

Treatment typically consists of a series of approximately 4 sessions spaced about 3 weeks apart, although treatment recommendations may vary from person to person. Each session generally lasts about 30 minutes and is considered very comfortable. No anesthetic or numbing is required, and patients are able to immediately return to their normal routine following treatment.

Some patients notice improvement after even one session, however the repetitive treatment process is important for encouraging longer-lasting collagen remodeling and tissue adaptation over time. For most patients, maintenance or “touch-up” sessions are recommended approximately every 6–12 months to help maintain results.

The goal of NightLase therapy is to help reduce the sound of snoring while also supporting healthier nighttime breathing and improved quality of restorative sleep. Our trained clinicians carefully evaluate airway anatomy, oral structures, symptoms, and overall health history to help determine whether this therapy may be an appropriate option for you.

This treatment is not intended to replace other medical therapies recommended for obstructive sleep apnea when indicated by your physician or medical team. Instead, NightLase is often incorporated into a broader airway-focused treatment plan and may be combined with therapies such as myofunctional therapy, mandibular advancement appliance therapy, nasal hygiene protocols, orthodontic expansion, or CPAP therapy if indicated for your medical team.

OraLase® & BabyLase® Fascial Laser Therapy

OraLase® & BabyLase® are gentle laser therapies designed to help release restricted fascial tissues, improve mobility of oral structures, and support greater balance and function throughout the body. These therapies utilize a specific Nd:YAG laser wavelength to deliver gentle low-level non-ablative laser energy to targeted oral and facial tissues in order to encourage relaxation, improved circulation, tissue mobility, and fascial release.

Fascia is a continuous web-like connective tissue system that surrounds and supports muscles, nerves, organs, and soft tissues throughout the body. The fascial tissues associated with the tongue and mouth are intricately connected through the head, neck, spine, and body all the way down to the toes. Because of these interconnected pathways, restrictions within the oral and facial tissues may contribute to imbalance, tension, pain, altered movement patterns, and dysfunction elsewhere throughout the body. [Include image of entire fascia system here]

By gently treating restricted oral and facial tissues, OraLase and BabyLase therapy aim to help improve tongue function, posture, breathing patterns, muscular balance, tissue mobility, and overall alignment. Patients often report improvements in comfort, mobility, body awareness, and oral function following treatment.

Patients of all ages may benefit from this therapy. Adults experiencing head, neck, facial, or jaw discomfort may find improvement in muscle tension and functional balance, while infants and children struggling with poor feeding, latch difficulties, oral restrictions, mouth breathing, or airway-related concerns may also benefit from treatment. These therapies are often incorporated alongside other airway- and function-focused modalities such as myofunctional therapy, appliance therapy, airway rehabilitation, and oral functional therapy programs. In some situations, we may also recommend collaborative care alongside an osteopath or other bodywork practitioner to further support full-body alignment and optimize functional outcomes.

Treatment typically consists of a series of 30-minute sessions spaced a few weeks apart depending on your clinician’s recommendations and treatment goals. The procedure is extremely gentle and comfortable, with many patients describing the sensation as feeling like a warm laser massage or a gentle “hug from the sunshine.”

OraLase® utilizes Nd:YAG laser technology that has been widely studied for its ability to support tissue healing, reduce inflammation, improve comfort, and promote neuromuscular balance with a strong safety profile when performed by properly trained clinicians.

Myofunctional Therapy & Functional Airway Health

Myofunctional therapy is a specialized therapy focused on improving the coordination, strength, and resting posture of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and airway muscles. These muscles play an important role in breathing, swallowing, chewing, speech, facial growth, sleep quality, and long-term airway development.

At Well Being Dentistry, we view myofunctional therapy as an important part of supporting healthier breathing patterns and long-term oral-systemic health. Improper oral habits such as mouth breathing, low tongue posture, tongue thrusting, poor swallowing patterns, and weak oral musculature can contribute to narrowing of the dental arches, poor facial development, airway restriction, sleep-disordered breathing, and bite instability over time.

Therapy works through guided exercises and habit retraining techniques designed to improve nasal breathing, tongue posture, lip seal, swallowing coordination, muscle tone, and overall oral awareness. The tongue is one of the body’s most powerful guiding forces for natural jaw and facial development, making myofunctional therapy especially valuable during childhood growth years. Healthier tongue posture and breathing patterns may help support broader arches, improved airway development, and more balanced facial growth over time.

Myofunctional therapy is commonly recommended for patients with concerns related to mouth breathing, sleep quality, airway development, oral habits, tongue posture, orthodontic stability, snoring, or functional oral imbalance.

At Well Being Dentistry, we offer a variety of therapy programs depending on each patient’s goals and needs. Some patients benefit from shorter introductory programs focused on education and awareness, while others choose more comprehensive therapy programs — including our full 12-session course — designed to help establish long-term functional habits and muscle memory.

Therapy sessions are typically about 30 minutes in length and in many cases can be completed either in person or virtually. Children may begin therapy as young as age 4 provided they are able to follow instructions appropriately with the support of a parent or guardian at home.

Myofunctional therapy is often combined with other airway-focused treatments such as appliance therapy, clear aligner therapy, mandibular advancement appliances, treatment, and nasal hygiene protocols as part of a comprehensive approach to healthier breathing, sleep, growth, and overall function.
