Microbiome Care
Laser Bacterial Reduction
As part of our minimally invasive and biologically minded approach to care, we use dental laser technology to help reduce harmful bacteria, support healthier tissues, and improve patient comfort during and after treatment. At Well Being Dentistry, we utilize several dental lasers, including the dual-wavelength Fotona laser system and multiple diode lasers for different clinical applications. Lasers can be used to help reduce bacterial contamination in a variety of procedures, including gum pocket disinfection, beneath restorative treatments such as fillings, root canal disinfection, and following tooth extractions.
Dental lasers have been used in dentistry for decades and are considered safe and effective adjuncts to modern dental care when used appropriately and with proper training. Today, laser technology is widely utilized to support periodontal therapy, soft tissue procedures, bacterial reduction, and improved patient comfort.
For many periodontal procedures, we use a diode laser to target bacteria within the gum pockets and inflamed tissues surrounding the teeth. Certain harmful periodontal pathogens — including pigmented “red complex” bacteria associated with disease — are highly absorptive to specific wavelengths of laser light. This allows the laser energy to selectively disrupt and reduce bacterial populations within periodontal pockets while supporting a healthier environment for healing.
Laser therapy may also be used during restorative procedures to help reduce bacteria beneath dental fillings and support a cleaner, healthier foundation for restorations. In addition, lasers may be used following tooth extractions, around inflamed tissues, or during root canal therapy when bacterial reduction and tissue management are important.
One of the benefits of laser therapy is that it is typically very gentle and comfortable. Many procedures can be performed with little to no anesthetic, depending on the treatment and the individual patient. Laser therapy may also help support improved healing response, reduced inflammation, and greater comfort following procedures.
Chronic inflammation and harmful oral bacteria have been linked to a variety of systemic health concerns throughout the body. Inflamed or “leaky” gum tissues can allow bacteria, inflammatory byproducts, and toxins to enter the bloodstream and circulate to other organ systems. By helping reduce bacterial load, support healthier gum tissues, and create a healthier oral environment, laser therapy may help minimize the burden of harmful bacteria entering the body and support overall oral-systemic health.
Meridian-Based Assessment & The Meridian Tooth Chart
At Well Being Dentistry, we recognize the close relationship between oral health and the rest of the body. As part of our comprehensive and biologically minded approach to care, we may incorporate discussion of the meridian tooth chart when evaluating chronic inflammation, recurring dental concerns, or unexplained symptoms that may warrant a deeper look at oral-systemic connections.
The meridian tooth chart is based on principles used in traditional Eastern medicine, where different teeth are believed to be energetically connected to specific organs, muscles, joints, and body systems through meridian pathways. While this concept is not part of conventional dental diagnosis, many patients and integrative practitioners find it to be a valuable framework for exploring possible patterns between chronic oral inflammation and broader health concerns.
For example, chronic infections, unresolved inflammation, old dental trauma, root canal complications, cavitations, or ongoing irritation around certain teeth may sometimes correspond with symptoms occurring elsewhere in the body along related meridian pathways. In some cases, patients who have struggled with unexplained or unresolved health concerns choose to explore whether oral inflammation or hidden dental issues could be contributing factors.
Our role is not to diagnose systemic disease through the meridian chart, but rather to help patients explore oral health more comprehensively and identify areas that may benefit from further evaluation. Through advanced imaging, periodontal assessment, airway evaluation, and detailed review of dental history, our team works to identify possible sources of chronic inflammation or bacterial burden within the mouth.
If you are experiencing ongoing health concerns that have been difficult to fully resolve, a meridian-based assessment may be one additional tool to help explore possible oral-systemic connections with the guidance of our dedicated team.
Probiotic Support & The Oral Microbiome
At Well Being Dentistry, we believe that creating health in the mouth is not only about reducing harmful bacteria—it is also about helping beneficial bacteria thrive. As part of our biologically minded and microbiome-focused approach to care, we often recommend incorporating targeted oral probiotics into your home care routine to help support a healthier and more balanced oral microbiome.
Following periodontal therapy and laser bacterial reduction, we frequently discuss which oral probiotics may be best suited for your individual needs. Our goal is not simply to eliminate harmful pathogens but to help repopulate the mouth with beneficial commensal bacteria that support healthier gums, fresher breath, improved immune balance, and long-term oral stability. By reducing harmful bacterial overgrowth through in-office therapy and then strategically introducing beneficial bacteria, we aim to create a healthier and more resilient oral environment.
The oral microbiome and gut microbiome are also closely connected. Research continues to demonstrate significant overlap between the bacteria found in the mouth and those found throughout the digestive system. Because the mouth serves as the gateway to the gastrointestinal tract, imbalances within the oral microbiome may influence inflammation and microbial balance elsewhere in the body. For some patients experiencing gut-related concerns, improving oral health and reducing chronic oral inflammation may play an important supportive role in broader digestive and systemic wellness.
Using advanced salivary diagnostics and our customized periodontal protocols, our team can better understand your unique bacterial profile and help guide recommendations for which beneficial bacteria and oral probiotic therapies may best support your oral health goals. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we strive to create individualized treatment strategies designed to support long-term balance within the oral microbiome and the body as a whole.
Airflow Technology & Biofilm Therapy
At Well Being Dentistry, we use advanced technology as part of our minimally invasive and microbiome-focused approach to preventive and periodontal care. Airflow therapy helps us effectively disrupt and remove biofilm—a sticky, organized layer of bacteria that adheres to the teeth, gums, tongue, and other oral tissues.
Biofilm is much more than simply “plaque.” Harmful oral bacteria work together within this protective structure, communicating and organizing into complex bacterial communities that become increasingly difficult to remove over time. When biofilm is allowed to remain undisturbed, it can trigger chronic inflammation, bleeding gums, periodontal disease, bad breath, and ongoing bacterial imbalance within the mouth. Biofilm also reforms very quickly, which is why regular disruption and maintenance are so important for maintaining healthy tissues and minimizing inflammation.
Our Airflow technology uses a combination of water, air pressure, and specialized fine powders to gently disrupt biofilm on the teeth, around restorations, and even deep within periodontal pockets and hard-to-reach areas that cannot always be visualized directly. This allows us to more thoroughly cleanse bacterial accumulation while remaining gentle on the teeth and soft tissues.
Airflow therapy is also extremely effective for removing stubborn stain caused by foods, beverages, smoking, and chromogenic bacteria that produce dark surface staining. By creating smoother, cleaner tooth surfaces and reducing bacterial buildup along the gumline, we help create an environment where gingival tissues can heal and reattach more effectively. Healthy, tight, pink gums are always one of our primary goals.
In addition to hygiene and periodontal therapy, Airflow can also be used during restorative procedures to help create exceptionally clean tooth surfaces prior to bonding procedures. Cleaner surfaces may help support stronger and more predictable adhesion for restorative materials.
One of the greatest benefits of Airflow therapy is patient comfort. The treatment is gentle, minimally invasive, and for most patients can be completed without the need for anesthetic or numbing. Overall, Airflow technology serves as another valuable adjunct in helping us reduce harmful bacterial burden, support healthier tissues, and create greater balance within the oral environment.
Ozone Therapy: Ozonated Water & Gas
At Well Being Dentistry, we utilize ozone therapy as part of our biologically minded and minimally invasive approach to oral health. Ozone has been used in medicine and dentistry for decades due to its powerful antimicrobial properties and ability to support cleaner, healthier healing environments.
Ozone is a highly energized form of oxygen made up of three oxygen atoms rather than the two atoms found in the oxygen we normally breathe. Using our in-office ozone generator, medical-grade oxygen can be converted into ozonated water or ozone gas for use during a variety of dental procedures and therapies.
Ozone is known for several unique therapeutic properties:
- Highly antimicrobial against bacteria, viruses, and fungi
- Able to oxidize and disrupt microbial cell walls upon contact
- Supports cleaner environments for tissue healing
- Quickly converts back into oxygen after use, leaving minimal chemical residue behind
At Well Being Dentistry, we incorporate ozone therapy in a variety of ways throughout dental treatment, including the following:
- Ozonated water during preventive cleanings and periodontal therapy to help reduce harmful oral bacteria
- Deep cleanings and periodontal pocket irrigation to support healthier gum tissues
- Pre- and post-treatment rinses to decrease bacterial load throughout the mouth
- Beneath restorative dental work to help disinfect tooth structure and create cleaner, healthier surfaces prior to bonding procedures
- Root canal disinfection protocols to help reduce bacterial contamination within the canal system
- Post-extraction therapy to help decrease bacteria and support healthy healing responses
Because ozone can be delivered in multiple forms, it can often be incorporated into many different dental procedures as an additional layer of antimicrobial support.
One of the advantages of ozone therapy is that it is gentle, comfortable, and minimally invasive. Ozone has been safely utilized in dentistry for many years and serves as another valuable adjunct in helping us reduce harmful bacteria, support healing, and create a healthier oral environment that supports overall systemic wellness.
Diet, Nutrition & Product Guidance
At Well Being Dentistry, we believe that creating health in the mouth and body begins with what we routinely put into it. Nutrition and lifestyle habits play a major role in the health of the teeth, gums, oral microbiome, and overall systemic wellness. Our goal is not simply to treat disease but to help educate and guide patients toward habits that support long-term health.
What you eat and drink each day is extremely important — but how often you eat and drink may be even more significant. Harmful oral bacteria thrive on sugars and carbohydrates, using them as a food source and converting them into acids that can weaken enamel, irritate gum tissues, and create imbalance within the oral environment. This includes not only obvious sources like candy and sugary beverages, but also foods such as chips, crackers, processed snacks, and other refined carbohydrates that break down into sugars within the mouth.
Frequent snacking or sipping beverages throughout the day can keep the mouth in a prolonged acidic state, creating an environment where harmful bacteria are able to thrive. Even drinks that may seem harmless — including flavored beverages, sparkling waters, sports drinks, coffee additives, or frequent acidic exposures — can contribute to ongoing imbalance when consumed continuously over time.
Our team works closely with patients to provide realistic and individualized guidance designed to support healthier habits without feeling overwhelming. We often recommend supportive products, nutritional strategies, and simple lifestyle modifications that can help improve the oral environment while fitting naturally into your daily routine. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we strive to customize recommendations that are practical, sustainable, and easy for you to successfully implement long-term.
