Your mouth is home to hundreds of microbial species—and they’re not all bad. A healthy oral microbiome is about balance, not eliminating every bacterium in sight.
When that balance gets disrupted, harmful bacteria can gain the upper hand, contributing to tooth decay, gum inflammation, periodontal disease, and bad breath
Mouth breathing can dry out the oral environment and reduce saliva’s natural protective effects. When the mouth gets dry, harmful bacteria may have an easier time thriving, increasing the risk of inflammation and disease.
And inflammation in the mouth doesn’t always stay in the mouth. Inflamed gum tissue can become more permeable—a concept often referred to as “leaky gums.” This can allow oral bacteria and inflammatory byproducts to enter the bloodstream, connecting oral inflammation with inflammation throughout the body.
Think of your mouth as a window into the rest of your body. What happens in your oral environment can provide important clues about your overall health.
Quite a lot.
Saliva testing gives us a closer look at the specific bacteria living in your mouth, including bacteria associated with periodontal disease. Instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we can use this information to better understand what may be contributing to inflammation and personalize your care.
At Well Being Dentistry, we believe that sometimes the best way to understand a problem is to look a little deeper. Your saliva has information. Let’s listen to what it’s telling us.
